Myers-Briggs For Fun Team Building
Myers-Briggs is one of the most accomplished personality assessments in the world. Created over 50 years go, the tool is remarkably accurate and corresponds to the 4 human personality archetypes, identified, and traced throughout history for over 2000 years!
It is an open secret that many people feel that their jobs don't fit them, but they cannot accurately pinpoint where the discontent is coming from. This is where the Myers-Briggs personality assessment comes in. By taking the test, team members will become more aware of their own personality types, which also defines what kind of work they are most comfortable with. If your team is willing to share their Myers Briggs type information, the team may start to think of how to make the current work tasks suit each team member better.
But how does that help the team building efforts?
First, the awareness of one's personality type will help the person identify what kinds of tasks that person would love and hate to do. Eliminating or delegating some tasks may significantly increase the job satisfaction and also increase results. For example the Rational temperament (xNTx Myers-Briggs) is more pre-disposed to strategic planning and will love this activity, while the Guardian temperament (xSxJ) will loathe the activity because it does not produce any immediate results. xSxJ would much rather solidify the current activities in an easy to follow checklist or a standard operating procedure. By informally re-assigning tasks between these two people, you will notice how a better job fit reduces stress and delivers better performance!
Second, personality colors individual's perception. It may be quite a shock to discover that your co-workers of different personality types will always see things differently. Since about the age of 12, their personal preferences colored every decision they made. This is why it is very difficult to see how things can be done differently! Awareness of this fact alone can be used to soothe tensions and focus on the productive problem solving instead. Having different viewpoints, combined with teamwork, allows you to create a much better and effective solutions, as blind spots are minimized.
Here's how you can introduce Myers-Briggs in a fun way - create a whiteboard or a wall space and ask your team members to take the Myers-Briggs personality assessment. Post the results on the wall (voluntary). Consult the wall for guidance before doing major projects. Recognize that none of your team members are "broken" - they are just different!
